Ivanco Talevski is an interdisciplinary artist and educator living between Philadelphia, in the US, and Bitola, in Macedonia. He uses drawing, print, painting, sound, and installation strategies to address political circumstances by evoking questions around memory, nostalgia, belonging, borders and history, and their persistence and erasure. The subjects of his work come out of the experience of being in, living in, and going back and forth between two cities, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US, and Bitola in Macedonia. He is interested in approximating the architecture of the space between these two localities concerning political, social, and cultural processes that are inherently global. This process of working with the past, present, and future of these two localities begins with drawing as a way to generate fragments which are then activated in installations and collaborations. These networks and operations allow for the convergence of multiple histories, voices, and mediums in order to introduce new spatial relations and ways to interrogate social and political constructs, and state and global mechanisms. Recent collaborative projects have brought together artists, musicians, composers, poets, and traditional craftspeople, aiming to generate prismatic vantage, new narratives, and a soft resistance towards forces that operate outside of democratic control.
